A KIND OF MAGIC

Old Railway Station, Bridgewater

Trace Balla, Lorena Carrington, Liz Duthie, Chris Kennett

Loved by adults as much as children, the work of book illustrators can be charming or weird, devilishly intricate or angelically simple, sparkly, sombre, playful, soulful, whispery, shouty and … magical. Four of the very best artists come together to present this dazzling array of children’s book illustrations. Each different in technique and style, their work is united by the devotion to creating books that are truly memorable.

Prints and books for sale.

Trace Balla lives on Djaara Country. Her ancestors come from Hungary, England and France - from them she has inherited a love of dance and artistic creativity. Trace loves to rise at dawn, especially in late winter when it’s frosty, and walk up hills above the fog line to marvel at the dawn light and early spring flowers. She creates graphic novels and children’s books about connecting with Country and community. A self-described ‘story catcher,’ she finds inspiration in nature and incorporates local plant and animal species into her detailed, cartoon-style drawings.

Lorena Carrington is an artist and illustrator whose books have been published in Australia and internationally. Her works are created using photography and digital montage techniques to form richly layered images. She has worked with Kate Forsyth, Sophie Masson and Carmel Bird, and has illustrated fairy tale collections, picture books, and created covers for novels and anthologies. She also exhibits her work in galleries around Australia, and holds workshops on illustration, books and story. Her books include the junior fiction title, Leaf Letters, which she both wrote and illustrated. Her new picture book, created with writer Sophie Masson, is The Giant.

Liz Duthie is an internationally published children’s book illustrator visual artist and art educator based in Djaara Country (Castlemaine). Her first picture book, Wombat, by Christopher Cheng received a Royal Zoological Society of NSW Whitely Award Commendation and was a 2022 CBCA Notable Book. Liz has illustrated books for the National Library of Australia as well as Little Pink Dog Books, and has a new book coming out this year with Wild Dog.

Chris Kennett has been drawing ever since he could hold a pencil (or so his mum says). But professionally, he’s has been creating quirky characters for just over 20 years. Working his way from animation through to children's books, Chris has managed to work on some truly "out of this world" projects including the beloved Star Wars series of Little Golden Books. His most recent projects include the hugely popular first reader series School of Monsters with Sally Rippin, Mr Luke's Magic Library with Internet sensation Mr Luke and Brunocorn with prolific picture book author Rory H Mather. Chris Kennett will be at the Railway Station 1.30pm Saturday
