Hidden in Plain Sight

Mr Dimples & Sarah Wallace-Smith

James Boyle Hall, Boort

Hidden in Plain Sight is a compelling collaborative exhibition by local artists Mr Dimples and Sarah Wallace-Smith, both of whom have deep roots in the Loddon Shire. This unique collection brings together two contrasting yet complementary artistic voices, one with urban street art and the other with contemporary visual storytelling, united by a shared passion for the arts. The title speaks to a truth familiar to many regional creatives; while metropolitan artists often dominate the spotlight, countless talented individuals in rural communities remain largely unseen. Many local artists, despite their skill, vision, and dedication, continue to create quietly, their work known only to a few. This exhibition, held at James Boyle Hall, serves as both revelation and celebration. Mr Dimples and Sarah Wallace-Smith shine a light on the vibrant, often hidden art culture thriving within the Loddon Shire. It is a modern and diverse showcase that reflects the depth and complexity of life in regional Victoria. Hiding in Plain Sight invites visitors to uncover the unexpected, to see what has always been there, but perhaps never truly noticed.

Mr Dimples Emerging from the shadows of a restless night in 2012, Mr Dimples was born. Following a series of unsettling encounters with an intruder near his home, the Bendigo-based artist turned to the streets, channelling his insomnia and unease into a new artistic voice. What began as a personal response to fear evolved into a distinctive visual language grounded in honesty, vulnerability, and reflection. Working primarily with paste-ups and stencils, Mr Dimples crafts urban narratives that explore the emotional landscapes of modern life, such as friendship, work, digital disconnection, and the absurdities of dating. Each piece, adorned with his signature characters and stylised expressions, becomes a snapshot of a lived moment, often laced with dry wit and emotion. Whether plastered across city walls or captured on canvas, Mr Dimples’ work invites viewers into his inner world, where every character tells a story, and every story carries the weight of personal truth.

Sarah Wallace-Smith is a multidisciplinary artist based in Bendigo. Her paintings draw reference from her rural upbringing, family life and ties to the military.  Sarah uses layering techniques to incorporate a wide array of materials, from watercolour to gunpowder. Inspiration comes from unravelling memory, sensation, light and experiences as they float to the surface, informing her colour palette, symbolism, form and dynamic tension.
