Milton Moss
What do you do following a career as an advertising art director?
Milton Moss found his mojo by heading out to look at clouds. And not necessarily the pretty fluffy ones – he’s most enamoured of the ones that pile up black and ominous over landscapes that seem to rise to meet them.
Now based in Maryborough, west of the Loddon Valley, Milton has discovered ample opportunity to get his fill of dramatic landscapes particularly around the Moolort Plains and Joyces Creek area. He photographs evocative scenes, and also paints them, nurturing a lifelong interest that he’s only been able to devote time to since retiring from full-time work.
“I have always loved art and drawing,” Milton says. “It was the only thing I was really good at in school. It led me into a career in advertising and my personal art took a back seat for decades.
“I’m so glad I started again, as life gave me the gaps and time to pursue this love.
“I have always been a keen wild weather landscape photographer and one day the penny dropped.
I combined my two loves, painting these landscapes in oils, using my experience of being out in the weather and my photographs as the inspiration.”
Milton says the venue – Both Banks Vineyard 12 ks out of Inglewood, is ideal for an exhibition of his work. “I’ve been and visited Mark at Both Banks Vineyard and we agreed my work will really fit in with the ambience of the winery, I’m looking forward to it.
“I’ll be looking out for old unusual buildings, wild weather, wild colour to photograph and then pick the best images to paint.
“I really am a landscape photographer and painter. When I’m out in the middle of an approaching rainstorm or dust storm, it is full on, wild, fast moving clouds, changing light conditions.
“You have to be ready and alert because at one moment you could have a potential award winning shot to take…3 seconds later it's gone!
“However it is quite exciting when you nail it!”
